Traveling with tots

Traveling is fun. You get to see new places, you experience new things and you meet new people. Traveling is great. But to travel with children, that’s another story.

To travel with kids is to accept that during the whole duration of a trip, you are going to be part-time nanny, part-time tourist. You see, this is one of the things single people dread about having children. The moment you have kids, most of your travels will include a little person tugging at your sleeve.

Traveling with kids could be scary. But you can make it easier by taking precautions. Trips with kids can be as fun as trips that without them. Although of course, you have to make some modifications to your travel plans. Here are some tips:

• Do not forget to take your first-aid kit – Kids are injuries waiting to happen. They walk a few steps then they come back with a gash on the knee or a bump on the forehead. So first-aid kits always come in handy.

• Know where the nearest hospital to your hotel is.- For obvious reasons.

• Keep your travel documents in a safe place – Kids are naturally curious. You can’t fault them for wanting to know what you have packed inside the giant suitcase. You can be assured that they will not stop until they pry apart your luggage. So if you still want to get home, keep your passports, tickets and other important documents somewhere the kids’ curious hands can’t reach.

• Make your child carry some sort of identification – As obsessive-compulsive as it may sound, it wouldn’t hurt to be sure. Put your contact information on a paper and make your kid carry it all the time during your trip. But be careful not to put too much information though. Just write down your name and the hotel you are staying at.
